I have recently found out about the baby group which of held on a Wednesday morning. I have started to attend these and really enjoy them. I did not know that the group was being run, it was only by word of mouth I found out about this group. I feel it is great for the estate as being a new mum I found it hard to get in to the town centre on a morning and group is on our doorstep. The staff are great and can offer help and advice. The centre should be kept open in order to help parents like myself to get out and socialise our children with other children and learn through play.
For help with funds the space should be let out when not in use. I would hire it to run fitness classes. I’m sure other people would hire it for birthday parties etc if it was an option.
As a child I attended an evening youth club there, this would be great to get the older children involved too. The centre could be used as a hub for all different ages.

I live on the Weston estate, instead of building on green land, how about doing up old buildings? If more people are coming into our town to live, more schools would be better! Also, another thing which is really annoying me as well as other drivers, is the yellow box at the top of Clap Gate/Bridge Street, something needs to be seriously sorted out there! Drivers will block the yellow box by parking into it, and blocking traffic coming out of courthouse street! Putting up a camera to fine the drivers would be helpful, putting up a triangle warning sign or a hazard sign is another good idea, something needs to be sorted out before a serious accident is going to happen!! There’s already a lot of traffic that goes through our town! We need an authoritive figure traffic warden to make sure our roads are in order.

    Kind regards

I can see that the community centre is poorly used, however, the land next to it is, virtually all day, everyday. Many people use the land for dog walking and general leisure. It is a safe place for people and their dogs, particularly in the winter when it is dark. We start walking our dogs there at 6.30am and we know there will always be a friend there for us to walk in safety with. People use the field throughout the day as it is in a central location to all the houses around it.

In terms of the building, surely it could be better used with some investment ? It could be a multi functional space to serve different sections of our community. For example, it could have an IT suite that could be used by everyone with IT classess, for people not IT literate, a homework session for students, a leisure session for anyone who wanted to use them for pleasure. The centre could also host events and classes, with a free of charge policy. For example a very popular writing class is currently running there.

I look forward to meeting you on Thursday to talk to you further about this.

    With thanks

Please could you get an assurance from LCC that the adjacent fields will remain intact and unaffected by any future development.

    Thank you

  5. I find it terrible that they want to take the center away. Lcc are at fault for not advertising that the center is still there. When the houses were built people assumed the center was taken down, Lcc didn’t tell the community otherwise. There is renewed interest in the center being used for all kinds of groups, but it’s impossible to organise anything due to the unknowing if it’s going to be there in September. I help at the childrens group on a wednesday morn in term time. We have started to get the numbers up, and it will be a terrible shame if we have to relocate to the Children Center in town as many parents/grandparents wouldn’t want to attend. As this group is exclusive to Weston/Newall estate families. It needs refurbishment and new heating, but the toilets and kitchen are in a usable state, as if they were nit we would not be there. Many families rely on the center now , for somewhere to take their babies and younger children under 5 years of age. People could use it for parties for all ages as there is the fields behind that could be used also. The fee to use it could be of a minimal amount to help the community to use it more. If it goes it takes part of the community spirit with it. If it is to stay it needs advertising that it is there for use by all groups and people who want to have a base building within the heart of a community. I for one would try and set a group up , of crafts and cookery as many people would want to be able to do such things in time for christmas. Also community days could be held where fundraising for the center could be done, to help improve the surroundings inside and outside of the building. As it’s things like this that get people in.

I cannot attend the meeting but would like you to make sure my comments are put forward.

Firstly, it is utterly disgraceful that had I not had links with Cllr Lay on Facebook then myself and others local residents would have no knowledge that this meeting was scheduled to take place. To place a small notice in Thursday’s Wharfedale Observer on the day of the meeting is just not acceptable.

Secondly, the meeting will not be representative of the numbers who would wish to be informed of any changes to the current use of the Centre. This is because lack of awareness and information means that many people will not even know of the proposals.

Thirdly, there is huge concern as to any possible changes to the green areas adjacent to the Community Centre. This recreation area is vital to the wellbeing of many local people and not just those of us who live in the direct vicinity of the Centre. We would like concrete assurance from LCC that the recreation areas would be protected now and in the future. Thank you
