Update on Wellcroft Park Otley Renovation

by Sandy on 21 October, 2015

The K5 Matrix unit stands at 3.9m high and has an impressive 16 different play features. Including Matrix Slide, Bannister Slide, Climbing Net, Action Spinner and Swingalong

In Spring 2015 I stepped away from this renovation so that other councillors, who said during their election that they wanted to lead on this project, could be given the space to progress its development.

Unfortunately this does not appear to have happened so I have, perhaps unwisely, rejoined the project and have continued to meet with Parks & Countryside to work through the constraints of the Yorkshire Water pipe that borders the current play park and the opportunities for a complete redesign.

The work to renovate Wellcroft Park continues, albeit painfully slowly, with new plans being proposed by Leeds City Council Parks & Countryside. These new plans include a radical change from previous plans/ideas therefore I am keen to gather the thoughts of children and residents.

We have previously consulted with children and parents with regards the type of equipment they would like and I think, broadly and within the budget, P&C have catered for. (see the K5 Matrix Agility System for more details)

Below is a ‘stretch’ of the new plan which now includes ‘moving’ the play park to the other side of the mound and turning the current play park back into a grassed area. The ‘net’ effect will be that there is no loss of greenspace.

The reasons for the radical rethink are

  • Due to the position of the Yorkshire Water pipe, which is just 30cm (1 foot) below the grass surface it is not possible to move or cut into the mound
  • Due to the size of the new equipment the current space is not big enough

All of this now comes in at a whooping £110,000 nearly £50,000 more than we have at the moment so we continue to look for further funding.

thanks for the update sandy. Whilst the k5 equipment looks lovely it is labelled as age 10+ so I’m concerned there is not enough for toddlers and younger kids as plans stand. A slide for younger ones is a must and I would much prefer an old style roundabout to the dish one – it would offer more open ended play to mixed groups of children. I think there needs to be a better balance for the age groups whilst noting it is good that the older kids are being catered for. Is it an option for the existing round about be re used? Also I’m not a big fan of the proposed springers, again could the existing see saw springer replace one of them? These would probably present only modest money savings but we’re not greedy, we don’t need everything new and the current ones don’t look to be in too bad shape.
